Moose under the window. A fox at the balcony. A marmot taking his afternoon sun on the rocks. None of it is staged — it's simply the company you keep when you live at the edge of the forest.
Come see for yourselfThe cabin borders the White River National Forest, sits at the end of the road, and comes wrapped in two extra lots of undeveloped land that we own. There are no fences, no landscaping, no reason for the animals to keep their distance — so they don't. They move through the yard the way they always have, and we just happen to have the best seats.
Over our summers here we've watched a mother moose and her calf bed down beneath the bedroom window — some nights they'd sleep right under the glass. A fox once stood under the balcony and tried to engage us. Deer pass through almost daily. It's the kind of thing that makes a month feel like another world.
Our girls woke up to a mother moose and her calf grazing right outside — and watched, noses to the glass, for the better part of an hour. This is the real thing, filmed from the window.
The headliners. We've had a mother and baby spend the night beneath the window more than once — an unforgettable sight first thing in the morning.
They graze the wild yard and wander the dirt road, often pausing to look you right in the eye before moving on.
Rusty and bold, he's appeared at the balcony to size us up — then trotted off into the wildflowers.
On warm afternoons he stretches out on the rocks to catch the late light. We do the same on the balcony.
They land on the deck posts and, if you're patient, will take food right from a child's hand.
The whole yard blooms in summer — no landscaping needed. We forage dandelion greens for a wild breakfast.
For a few weeks each spring, the melt forms a little stream the kids splash through — and then, as summer deepens, it quietly disappears. Stay long enough and you'll catch the small, seasonal magic most visitors never see.
The mountain goats some guests ask about were photographed on a hike at nearby Blue Lakes — not on the property. Everything else here is from the cabin and its yard.
